This builds academic credibility that closed-source competitors cannot match. By open-sourcing weights, DeepSeek accumulates points from every developer who downloads, fine-tunes, or deploys their models. Over 700 models based on DeepSeek-V3 and R1 are now available on the AI community platform HuggingFace, collectively receiving over 5 million downloads [46].
DeepSeek-V3 outperforms other open-source models and achieves performance comparable to leading closed-source models [47]. They're not specializing in one area like Anthropic (safety/coding) or OpenAI (general chat). Instead, they're systematically improving across all evaluation metrics simultaneously.
DeepSeek's training cost efficiency isn't just about saving money; it's a distinct competitive category where they consistently score highest. Early incidents exposed the limitations of xAI's approach. Shortly after major announcements, Grok experienced controversial moments that required intervention and resetting [30]. The gap between Musk's "truth-seeking" promises and the need for content moderation highlighted the tension between cultural positioning and operational reality.
